Ortiz has 4 hits to lift Red Sox over Twins (AP)

MINNEAPOLIS – David Ortiz had four hits and three RBIs and delivered the go-ahead single with two outs in the ninth inning to lift the Boston Red Sox to an 8-6 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Monday night.

Ortiz, a former Twin, hit a two-run homer in the sixth and finished a triple shy of the cycle. Jarrod Saltalamacchia added a homer and two RBIs to help the Red Sox win for the fifth time in seven games and move 1 1/2 games ahead of the idle Yankees in the AL East.

Paterno in hospital after player runs into him (AP)

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Joe Paterno was hospitalized and undergoing tests on his right arm and hip after a player ran into the 84-year-old coach during practice.

Paterno was admitted Sunday evening to Mount Nittany Medical Center after he walked away from the collision with a receiver who was running a route, the school said Monday.

Fergie backs young guns to shine for United (AFP)

LONDON (AFP) – Sir Alex Ferguson believes Manchester United’s dramatic fightback against Manchester City in the Community Shield proves he was right to put his faith in a youth revolution.

Ferguson’s side came from two goals down to beat arch rivals City at Wembley on Sunday despite fielding a second-half line-up with an average age of just 22.
